Ex-Netherlands international Quincy Promes has reportedly been arrested in Dubai after being sentenced to six years in prison for smuggling cocaine.

The former Ajax winger, who is currently contracted to Russian outfit Spartak Moscow, was convicted by an Amsterdam court in February. Dutch authorities have requested his extradition to the Netherlands, with the reporting that the 32-year-old has been apprehended in the United Arab Emirates.

WHAT PUBLIC PROSECUTION OFFICE SAID
The Amsterdam Public Prosecution office has said in a statement: “The arrest was made based on a Red Notice issued by the Netherlands. Netherlands will request the extradition of the man. The arrested man was reportedly staying in luxury in Dubai according to various media reports. However, he has been taken into custody thanks to the efforts of the authorities in both countries. At this time, it is not possible to provide additional information to avoid disruption of the ongoing investigation.”

Promes, who has 50 caps and seven senior international goals for his country, has been handed a prison sentence after being convicted of complicity in the smuggling of 1,370 kilograms of cocaine. He is accused of being involved in the import and export of Class A drugs.

WHAT NEXT?
That is not Promes’ first conviction, with the former Twente and Sevilla winger being found guilty in 2023 of stabbing his cousin in the leg. He was given an 18-month jail term for that offence, but did not attend the trial and denies the allegations.
